The unexpected top housing market in the nation going into 2021

With millions of Americans having transitioned from working at an office to working from home for some time now, where people call home is being influenced by this change.

As reported in a recent article in MarketWatch, a new Realtor.com report identified the housing markets that are positioned to be the strongest in 2021 across the nation by ranking cities based on their projected home sales and price growth.

Sacramento, which is California’s capital, was at the top of the list.

“This past year, we’ve all become more reliant on technology to work, learn, and maintain personal connections,” Realtor.com chief economist Danielle Hale said in the report. “The technology hubs that make this possible are thriving, as are their housing markets.”

Sacramento may not be a tech hub, but with it being located within a two-hour drive from San Francisco and San Jose, it has become a bedroom community for many who work for the country’s largest tech firms but can’t afford the high-cost of housing in those areas.

And since several tech companies, including Google and Twitter have stated that employees can continue working remotely until the following summer or longer, the advantages of living in Sacramento are pretty high especially with the good school system.

Other cities that will also likely see their housing markets boosted by the trending popularity of remote working include San Jose proper, Denver, Seattle and last year’s No. 1 housing market Boise, Idaho.

Aside from Sacramento, Denver and Boise, Phoenix and Harrisburg, Pa. count among the top 10 on Realtor.com’s list.

The top 25 housing markets for 2021, as ranked by Realtor.com, include Sacramento-Roseville-Arden-Arcade and San Jose-Sunnyvale-Santa Clara in the top two spots.
